Yamba’s golden generation creating history

May 3rd, 2021

Yamba clubmates reckon Mark Pirie is the supercoach of the north – presiding over a team which is rewriting local history.
But the canny Scotsman deftly deflects: “I’m just the conductor waving the stick, the kids are the ones making the music.”
Mark has been with the now Under 16s squad since they first pulled on the boots in the 5s and 6s.
It’s been a joyous journey – and they’ve been minor premiers and title winners for the past four seasons in the competitive age groups.
While only early into 2021 it’s been business as usual – with Yamba 16s slotting eight goals in their opener and seven in the second round.
“We’ve got a strong midfield backed by one of the best defensive lines I’ve ever seen at this level,” Mark said.
The club’s coaching coordinator said he was blessed with quality across the park.
“And we’ve got some great attacking players.”
Despite the inherited talent of “very sporty kind of kids”, Mark said their sustained success was linked to hard work.
“We train two, sometimes three times a week. I’m far, far from the supercoach of the north, but I do have a super team,” he said.
