If you’re looking for the beauty in the beautiful game – look no further than the Woolgoolga Cougars Over 30s women’s team.
Last year, they didn’t have a team. This year, they don’t have a coach and don’t train.
They’re winning, though – and having a barrel of laughs along the way.
“Our youngest player is 30 and our oldest is over 60,” explains Cougars manager and player, Vivien Wright.
“Some of our team have been playing for years, others did so as kids. Personally, I didn’t start until I was 41,” Vivien said.
“It’s just ladies doing something they love and everyone brings something different to the team. It’s friendly and competitive but at the end of the day we just want everyone to have fun.”
And joy they’ve had – winning their first two matches, slotting 11 goals and conceding just two.
“We’re not playing for sheep stations and we’re yet to meet some of the tougher teams,” Vivien said.
“It’s just good to see the rise of women’s football because this year we’ve got eight teams in the Over 30s so that’s a real positive.
