Situation in the northern rivers

March 1st, 2022

“From Dave Craggs (club president Lismore Workers FC) There is supposed to be a building there… our clubhouse is completely under. Can’t even see the roof.”

Hello, this morning I sent the following message to all North Coast Football Zone clubs. FYI, Andrew Woodward, General Manager, NCF.
Today I have spoken with Steve Mackney, General Manager of Football Far North Coast, about the situation in the northern rivers. He told me stories of tragedy and destruction in the area that has impacted his family and his local community, including those in the football family. Our concerns, first and foremost, are with the community at large and with rescue efforts and recovery efforts. This time last year, we were looking at similar scenes to the south. This year it is to the north. The proximity is not lost on me.
Football will play a role in recovery efforts and community rebuilding in due course. Nonetheless, our game will be severely impacted in the area, with some clubs losing their grounds, lights, facilities, and storage sheds. Many club volunteers will be rebuilding their lives after suffering losses.
Steve and I discussed ways we on the north coast could help when the time is right. We agreed there’s nothing to be done ‘right now’. Assistance, however, may be needed in the short to medium term by way of strips, balls, nets/posts, events equipment (chairs, tables, marques, etc.) and more.
So, the ‘action point’ out of the discussion was to ask north coast clubs to start thinking about how they can help. It would be appreciated if clubs could look in their equipment sheds to see if there’s any surplus or outdated equipment that could be donated if it is needed. Just have a look – don’t start getting it out yet.
I have also spoken with David Eland, CEO of Northern NSW Football. He has indicated they’ll lead efforts from outside the northern rivers to collect and deliver equipment and other support to impacted areas.
Steve has been sending me messages and pictures over the last 72 hours. I thought this one told the story for many in the football and wider community.
