Shooting stars – Charlie Shipperlee, Northern Storm

April 6th, 2021

He might be the new kid on the block, but for now life couldn’t be sweeter than if he was Charlie in a chocolate factory.
The fast rising 16-year-old had his first taste at the highest level when he debuted in the Coastal Premier League for the Northern Storm last year.
And Charlie Shipperlee conceded – at age 15 – he found it “really challenging”.
“Especially physically, everyone was so much bigger and I didn’t realise how hard they can kick a ball,” Charlie said.
It didn’t take the talented young keeper long to settle though, playing with the Storm reserves plus some outings with the firsts in the competitive CPL competition.
In football since he was five years of age, Charlie is used to jumping into the deep end and new environments.
He started out with Woolgoolga United, then through the 10s to 12s was in the SAP program for North Coast. In the 13s and 14s, the North Coast NPL door opened, and such was the potential he also made the Northern NSW nationals squad in consecutive years.
Enough said, but his story is actually just beginning.
“I love making the big saves,” Charlie said.
And he appreciates the special ‘end to end’ view a keeper has of a game.
“I like to help to control the (Storm) team from the back. It was hard at first but now I’m properly known by the players it’s coming together,” Charlie said.
