Season of dreams for Yamba women – play on!

September 8th, 2021

Yamba women have gone from zip to zippity-doo-dah in the 2nd Division North competition in the wink of an eye – and in the near-words of Oliver Twist, it’s now a case of please, Government, I want some more.
Last year due mostly to COVID, Yamba women couldn’t field a team.
This season, by jingo they did. Roll forward – they’ve been crowned premiers. Finished nine points clear. Undefeated.
Tick, tick, tick.
Breakers coach Nicolin Haafwee couldn’t be happier.
“We can only dream of finishing a season like this,” she said.
“We’ve got a solid bunch of girls. A socially coherent team and there’s been lots of catch-ups.”
While life and its challenges of the modern day – including partners stuck overseas for some team members – has rolled on, football has been a haven in the turmoil.
“Social sport is a big part of our mental health. I was really keen this year to play. The people in our team, they are my friends too,” Nicolin said.
While everyone in North Coast Football sweats on a decision as to whether the district will come out of lockdown, and if finals can proceed, the tension in Yamba is palpable.
“Injuries might be a concern. I haven’t touched a ball in a month, but just to get back out there would be so good,” Nicolin said.
“Of course we want to win, but even just having a kick with all the other girls would be so positive.”
