Sawtell Spirit and the fuel of champions

September 4th, 2021

Men’s Over 35s 1st Division minor premiers Sawtell Spirit have three special things in their favour.
The first is mateship – a quality found in many a squad.
And they also have youth on their side – as the Spirit players are all aged 35 or 36.
The final quality is that they have a ritual halftime feed, courtesy of Enver – a player who happily owns a kebab shop.
“It’s got to the stage where some players don’t want to come on in the second half because they haven’t finished their kebab,” team spokesman Jake Glover said.
Sawtell Spirit aren’t making too much of their premiers title.
“We were actually expecting Boambee to win it but they lost to Woopi, and we finished ahead just on goal difference,” Jake said.
“We’re only in it for a bit of fun and to have a kick around on a Thursday night.”
Apart from a narrow age bracket and kebabs shared – there’s more to the glue which binds the Spirit.
“Lots have been mates since kids – playing in their teens and early 20s for Sawtell,” Jake said.
“People moved away but we’re all of that age now where we’re back in town. It’s been fun because some haven’t kicked a ball for 15 years.”
