RUSHFORTH Park has hosted its first competitive games of the season as Westlawn Tigers and Coutts Crossing juniors played off last Friday night in Grafton.
Westlawn Tigers and Panthers under 15s teams played each other, while Westlawn and Coutts Crossing met in their under 16s fixture.
Football in the Clarence has been largely non-existent this season, due to the inclement wet weather seen earlier in the year, and the resulting unavailability of a number of grounds.
So it was a welcome sight for teams to play the first games seen at Rushforth Park this year, which had been out of action this season prior to last weekend.
A home ground being out of action was something Westlawn Tigers president Michael Salvestro could relate to.
“This weekend will be the first time we have played a home game at Barnier Park this season,” he said.
“We will have one field out of five in use, and the clubs really looking forward to it as it will be nice to be back on home soil and have the canteen open again.”
Salvestro said fellow Clarence clubs had been more than accommodating in hosting Tigers games.
“Because our grounds have been closed, other clubs like Yamba, Iluka, Maclean, and Coutts Crossing have been facilitating us, and if they have a time slot they put us in,” he said.
“We really appreciate what they’ve done to help us out and accommodate us.”
