Referees: Recruitment and raising the bar

March 22nd, 2021

North Coast Football’s premier match official Marty Gadd will have a new role this season and is looking forward to coaching local referees.
As the newly minted NCF Referees Development Officer, his mission will be broad – everything from coordinating courses and growing existing officials through to recruitment.
On the latter, Marty will work with clubs to identify potential referees.
He’s well qualified and respected for the gig – having stood in the centre for “roughly 30 years”.
“I carried the flag for my father when I was 10,” he explained, bar a brief hiatus from the ranks, playing rugby and putting in the hard yards as a registered nurse.
As now a clinical nurse specialist at Coffs Harbour Hospital and as a onetime university lecturer, expect Marty to bring a considered and thoughtful approach to development.
One of the streams will be individual fitness – which are prescribed at elite grade level like the A League.
“We would like match officials to be in the right place to make the right calls – so if there’s a basic framework for fitness that will make life easier,” Marty said.
As a point in reference, he noted he would cover 8 to 10 kilometres during a typical CPL assignment.
