Referee Jarod Baxter makes a splash

July 7th, 2021

Jarod Baxter is a young man in the middle and a lad on the move.
And this week he’s beaming on the back of a double-celebration – turning 18 years of age and being named the Newcastle Permanent Referee of the Month for June.
Jarod started in the officials’ ranks at age 15 in Sydney, and hasn’t missed a beat since moving to the Mid North Coast in February for university study.
He’s diving in – literally – in academia, in his first year of a Bachelor of Science at Southern Cross, specialising in Marine Science and Conservation.
“A lot of people my age work in fast food or retail – but for me it’s refereeing,” Jarod said.
“I just love soccer and refereeing is the closest substitute to playing.”
Jarod is well rated already – with assignments ranging from 14s, 15s, 16s and NPL through to running the line in the top tier Coastal Premier League.
“In refereeing you have to show leadership because you control the game. I love the responsibility that comes with it.”
No gig of course is without its challenges – even when you have the whistle.
“Trying to please everyone,” he laughs, “if you call a penalty one side will be happy and the other won’t be.”
Jarod recalled one of his first assignments on the coast was a more than willing junior rep game – and the cards were flying thick and fast, onfield and off.
Just as well then that the rising talent – as part of his Newcastle Permanent Monthly Award prize pack – has scored a mint set of referee’s cards.
Yep, Jarod’s good to go.
