North Coast 14s building nicely

May 4th, 2021

Curtis Heywood is a breath of fresh air at the wheel of one of the North Coast NPL sides this season.
It’s just his second year at the gig – having started with the 13s in 2020 and now mentoring much of the same crew in the 14s.
After challenging early engagements, the 14s were right in the battle against Valentine FC in a thrilling contest, with the visitors edging the hosts at Coffs 2-1.
“I actually couldn’t be at the game because I was sick,” Curtis said.
“But I’ve watched the tape and it was the best game so far.
“Especially in the first half. They kept the ball moving but just couldn’t put it in the back of the net.
“But I’m fairly confident we’ll do well this season.”
Curtis said the 14s had nine or 10 of the players carry on from last year – in what is a 15-person squad in 2021.
“We just need to continue to develop identity as a team, rather than as strong individuals,” he said.
At 30 years’ young, Curtis already boasts success as a coach of juniors at Northern Storm, and is relishing the climb in the NPL.
And he’s looking forward to working with Alex Nolan, the new Player and Coach Technical Development Manager.
“The four (NPL) squads have just been working together as a group and that seems to be working,” Curtis said.
