Mentoring with a smile on the dial

September 30th, 2020
Marcelo Bielsa, Jurgen Klopp, ‘Pep’ Guardiola and the yet to be world famous Andrew Plumb from the Northern Storm.
Andrew is not an EPL master manager, but he is a super coach at the grassroots coalface in North Coast Football.
And he’s a deserving winner of the Newcastle Permanent Community Award Coach of the Month for August.
Andrew has been coaching for six years – three with his eldest son, and now in his third year with his middle son’s team, the Under 11 Hurricanes.
And he still pulls the boots on himself for Northern Storm – in the Over 35s men and on Saturday afternoons in 3rd Division.
“Having high level experience as a player could help you as a coach with the more technical aspects, but when it comes to community football it’s probably more about having big enthusiasm and a friendly face,” Andrew said.
“A lot of coaches don’t have a background in the sport, so it’s all about bringing a positive attitude. Don’t be intimidated.”
Andrew said the rewards of coaching are as a simple as they are profound.
“Coaching has its moments,” he joked, before adding, “it’s pleasing to see the kids’ general improvement.
“Like when they start passing the ball instead of trying to do everything themselves.
“And when they gain a small skill that they might not have had the previous season – that’s very enjoyable.”
