Maggio magic – Alex flourishing after big call

September 30th, 2020
Alex Maggio could have been lost to football – but by will, not fate, it thankfully never came to that.

A few years back and with one season under his belt as a player for Boambee, the youngster found himself at the crossroads.

The club didn’t have a 15s and Alex didn’t want to ‘step up’ into the 17s.

Queue thinking music, queue a decision to enter the refereeing ranks.

Alex, now 16, stayed in the great game and he’s blossoming in the role.

So much so that the Year 10 Toormina High product has been named the Newcastle Permanent Community Award Referee of the Month for September.

“I’m just passionate about it,” Alex explained, on just his second year into officiating.

“I do it at my own speed and I control the game how I want.”

Alex has been serving as a centre referee for the 16s boys, and just lately, running the lines in the Coastal Premier League.

“I just love the game and really enjoy being involved,” he said.

And the sky’s the limit for the talented teen – though homework and formal studies remain for now very much in the picture.

“I’d like to go as high as possible (as an official) but I’ll just have to see, because at the moment I’ve still got school.”
