Good Will hunting with Sawtell

April 20th, 2021

Imposing teenager Will McKinney is setting out on new adventures this season – and he’s in solid company.
Will, Taj Northfield and Kai Allan are three rising talents who either live in the Nambucca Valley, or have played for the Strikers – now linking with the Scorpions.
Sawtell, Sawbucca, or Namtell … it’s a fresh combination that will bring loads of energy to the Coastal Premier League combination.
Will, 16 (he turns 17 on Friday), was an anchor in the the North Coast Youth National Premier League golden team.
This was a side which won a string of back to back to back titles, passing the larger Newcastle clubs in the process.
But as Will turned of age and graduated from the NPL 16s last year – fresh goals presented.
And 2021 won’t be his first taste of playing against men. It was one of the upsides of the COVID disruption that saw the North Coast 16 boys invited to play against the CPL outfits last year to keep them active.
“It was a lot more physical,” the centre back/midfielder recalled.
“It was more taxing on your body and you had to assert yourself on the field.”
With that early introduction of senior football in the tank, Will is upbeat on Sawtell’s prospects in the CPL first grade competition.
“It’s a young side but we’ve got a few experienced players who have been with Sawtell for years,” the Year 11 Nambucca Heads High student said.
Game on.
