Developing stars at Nambucca Strikers

March 31st, 2021

Nambucca Strikers see it as a credit to their development processes as this year they watch with pride some of their emerging talent swim to larger pools.
The Strikers will field one rather than two senior men’s teams in ’21 – and from the outside that might appear a regression. But it’s not how it’s framed at Strikers Central.
“We’ve lost some to uni and to CPL – but it’s good to see them going on to bigger things,” said Jenna Welsh – in her first year at the helm of the club.
“Overall, we’re looking really good – with Under 6s through to 15s. We don’t have a 13s at the moment, but will have two all-girls teams in the 12s and one boys.”
While junior registrations are “strong” – the seniors are also looking healthy, with open women’s and men’s sides in place plus Over 30s women’s and Over 35s men’s.
“After the turmoil of last season it’s just great to be looking at a normal year when parents and grandparents can come along, while we will still have our COVID plans in place,” Jenna said.
“And the ground is looking great – we’ve done some patchwork to get rid of those ankle breakers.”
It’s been a learning curve for Jenna in her first year as president, but an enjoyable journey.
“It can be a juggle because I am also managing the open men’s team but I have a great committee and executive. You’re only ever going to be as good as your team,” Jenna said.
Meanwhile, the Challenge Cup – a feted preseason tournament hosted by the Strikers at Coronation Park and fouled by the Big Wet – is now slated for the October long weekend.
