An army of dads leading the charge at Sawtell

August 24th, 2021

How many dads does it take to coach an Under 10s girls’ team. When it comes to Sawtell Stars – the answer is four.
One of the happy chappies at the helm is Joel Parkin, and he and three other fathers help guide the Stars around the park.
Joel’s daughter plays for the 10s, and another daughter turns out for the Sawtell Spirit in the 12s – which he also coaches.
It’s been a joyful journey and a testing one too for the Newcastle Permanent Coach of the Month.
“Only six of the 16 had played before,” Joel said of the U12s.
“I had to take it right back to the basics like how to kick a ball, using the inside of the foot and positioning was a really big one.
“In the first couple of games it was pretty funny. We had girls trying to pick the ball up with their hands, but the refs were pretty understanding.
“They’ve gone alright this season too. They’ve had a win and a draw and they’ve been competitive in every game.”
Joel has played football all his life and is relishing the ask of developing and mentoring youngsters.
He has a simple approach given the age of his charges.
“It’s just trying to give them enjoyment in the game. You make sure everyone gets a fair go, and everyone gets to try different positions,” Joel said.
“Given three-quarters (of the Sawtell Spirit) hadn’t played before they’ve done really well. They’ve picked it up quick.”
