XVIII McDonald's Kanga Cup
International Youth Football Tournament
Venue: Canberra

from July 6 to 11 2008

Download the latest 'Kanga Cooee' newsletter, see Downloads section.

The McDonald's Kanga Cup is an annual international youth football tournament (Under 10-18) that takes place in July in Canberra. For 2008, the event will take place from Sunday afternoon July 6 to the Finals on Friday July 11. The first Kanga Cup took place in 1991, so 2008 will be the 18th Kanga Cup and the sixteenth anniversary of the event been staged in the A.C.T.

WHAT is the McDonald's Kanga Cup?
The McDonald's Kanga Cup is the most prestigious youth tournament of it's kind to be currently operating within Australia and is, the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, and one of the biggest tournaments in the world. Winning a McDonald's Kanga Cup is the most coveted prize in Australian youth football. The tournament is open to club, school, association or community based teams that are part of the FFA Football Family. It caters for male and female youth ranging from 10 years to 18 years of age.

The McDonald's Kanga Cup provides an opportunity for participants to meet players from all over Australia as well as international visitors. Past participants have been from Australia, Chinese Taipei, Denmark, England, East Timor, Fiji, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Italy, New Zealand, People's Republic of China, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, the United States and others. Social and cultural exchange is encouraged between competitors throughout the tournament, with a wide range of social activities available for participants and officials making the tournament a "cultural festival of football".

The McDonald's Kanga Cup is hosted by Capital Football and sanctioned by Football Federation of Australia and the Asian Football Confederation.

WHEN is the Kanga Cup?
The 2008 McDonald's Kanga Cup will be held from July 6-11. Taking place annually in the July school holidays, it is noted that this is traditionally a busy time for development / representative teams. However, the MKC does not focus solely on the high performance level but provides opportunities for other players, teams and referees. Whether your association makes the MKC as part of the development / representative pathway or a club uses the MKC as a strategy to retain players in football, Capital Football believes that the MKC has something for everyone and should be part of everyone's Junior Football experience.

To ensure we do not disrupt other football commitments that teams and referees may have, Capital Football begins the tournament on the afternoon of Sunday July 6 (Opening Ceremony) and the finals are over by Friday July 11.

WHO Can Play?
The McDonald's Kanga Cup is for every youth boy and girl footballer of any standard. Catering for Under 10-18 male and female players, the McDonald's Kanga Cup provides for clubs and schools of 'Cup' level Division 1 standard teams and also 'Plate' level Division 2-3 standard teams.

After playing in a pool, each team will then move into either the Cup or Plate competitions (if there is a minimum of 8 teams). Two chances to win a competition! Depending on team nominations a minimum of four games is guaranteed (games are 50-70 minute durations - depending on the age group). If teams are knocked out early, friendly games can be arranged for Thursday.
